Very confused

OK, so I have done the myspace thing and love my facebook but for some reason cannot figure this blog thing out.?!  I have been on so many blogs where the backgrounds are so neat and they have slide shows etc...would love to know where they get them and how to put them on here.?  So sorry if my blog is very boring right now I promise to get a little more savvy with help. ;)
